How to Use Wood Screws

Before the use of wood screws, most of the woodworkers and carpenters prefer glue, nails, and wooden peg to lock the wooden panels. When you use glue to secure the wooden panels, you will see that they are not strong as the nails or wooden pegs. With hindsight, the wooden pegs and nails are not so efficient to make the wooden panels secure.

In truth, all these tools might work, but they will not be able to provide you with premium security. But then again, if you entertain the idea of using wood screws, you will likely to have premium security at your door. So, let us move forward and find out the ways to use wood screws correctly.

The Essential Facts About Wood Screws

Before you get to know the proper ways to use wood screws, you should read the essential facts of screws. They will allow you to understand why wood screws are a popular tool to use.

  1. There are two types of wood screw heads available for woodworking projects. They are – the slotted or flathead and the Phillips or crosshead.
  2. All wood screws have diverse head shapes such as – round head, flat head, and oval head. The round head ones come with expanded tops and flat bottoms whereas the flat head screws are suitable for installing hinges. Even you can use them to sink deep into the wood. Lastly, the oval head ones are a blend of round head and flat head screws.
  3. Keep in mind that the diameter and length of the screws will be different from one and another.
  4. All wood screws are made of hard steel. Besides, stainless steel along with brass is used to make wood screws. Some manufacturers even use a coat in the screws to stop any corrosion. However, the special coatings in the screws can affect the wood.

How to Use Wood Screws Correctly?

When you use wood screws, you have to remember that you will be using regular and self-tapping wood screws.  Typically, the self-tapping screw is easy to install. It will take less time and effort to work with these screws. All you have to do is take a flat head screwdriver, put it into the point of the screw on the spot, and start screwing the screws.

When you start turning the screwdriver, the screw will create a hole by cutting into the wood. As a result, you don’t need any drill work to make holes into the wood.

However, if you use the regular wood screw, you will need drill work. At first, mark out the places where you want to put screws. Then start drilling into the wood to make holes. Remember that the holes will be created according to the size of your screws. After that, you will go along and screw all the screws with a screwdriver.

Keep in mind that if you use both types of screws, you will not get them in a straightforward way. You will bear this risk while working with both of them. You will observe that a self-tapping screw can be drawn through the grain of the wood. Besides, you can achieve it by putting uneven pressure on the screwdriver. However, the risk will be less if you are using a drill machine because it will not put pressure to bite into the wood.

As a result, the screws will not get skew. Additionally, if you use a drill machine, you will most likely rely on the drill bit to bite into the wood. This is bigger for the screws that you will be using for your personal project.

Other than this, you need to ensure that you are getting the perfect screws to make materials out of them. You will see that some metals are rust-resistant than other metals. Instead, some will leave a nasty stain on the wood because they will react to the sap (leftover in the wood).

So, to avoid these problems, you have to research first and find out what you actually do with screws or what kind of screws you will be using in the project. If you find the answers to them correctly, they could lead to a successful DIY project!
