Log Splitters Which Type is Best For You

Log splitters come in three different types – electric, gas, and manual. But the toughest question is which one is the best for you? Actually, the answer totally depends on your requirements and budget for the specific work. The cheapest type of log splitters is manual firewood splitters.

Electric log cutters are a bit costly and gas wood splitters are the most expensive of all the log splitters. While looking for the most suitable log splitter for you, consider your affordability and the size of log you are going to split. The frequency of use is also an important factor to consider.  Let’s find out the different types of log splitters:

Different Types of Log Splitters

The best type of firewood splitter entirely depends on your requirements. If you want to use it for domestic purpose or moderately personal use, consider the size of your logs and your budget limit. If you are on a limited budget and using the splitter to cut small to medium size logs, manual log splitters will be best for you.

On the other hand, if you are finding a splitter for different indoor purposes, go for the electric log splitters. Choose the gas powered log spillers only when you need to split heavy duty and very hard logs.

Do not expect to get all the features in a single model because each model is unique compared to others. While buying a log splitter, always focus on your needs and preferences!

Manual Log Splitters

Manual log splitters have both advantages and disadvantages. One basic advantage of this machine is its cheapness. Firewood splitter is the most budget-friendly model of manual log spillers. They are available in two different designs- vertical or horizontal. You can buy any of them depending on your need.

A firewood processor provides nearly 10tons of splitting capacity and it get power from a two-speed pump. This splitter is physically more demanding than other two types of models available on the market.

Apart from these disadvantages, it is a very useful instrument for the woodworker. Due to being lightweight, it is very easy to carry from one place to another if needed.

Electric Log Splitters

Electric log splitters do not release any harmful fumes while running, thus, you can use it indoors. People like this feature a lot! This is a primary advantage of electric splitters over the gas splitters. They provide a large amount of splitting capacity comparing to the manual splitters.

Another advantage of an electric log splitter is that it can be operated on a standard 120volts outlet. The outlet is grounded so that the electric circuit does not burst due to overload. This type of log splitters is more affordable than the gas splitters. Moreover, electric splitters are more lightweight and portable comparing to them.

There are few drawbacks of this machine. One basic problem is that it must have access to an electric outlet for the operation. If your working field does not have an electric outlet, these splitters will not work.

Gas Powered Log Splitters

A gas powered firewood processor is the most expensive of all the log splitters. They provide maximum splitting capacity (up to 38 tons!) that outruns both the manual and electric splitters. So, this type of splitter is very suitable for splitting large and knotty logs.

They offer trailer hitch on many models which is used to move it from one place to another. They are very powerful, but you have to pay a lot for that. So, if you need to split small logs or use it for domestic purpose, do not buy the gas splitters.

The main disadvantage of this type of splitter is its extreme price. I must say, it is way more expensive than the other two types available on the market and it is out of range of many people.

Bottom Line

Whatever log splitter you use, you must maintain maximum safety standard! Check different parts and connections before starting the machine. While splitting, do wear equipment like eye protection, gloves and other safety gears. To operate the log splitter effectively, go through the user manual and follow manufacturer’s instructions.

Maintain proper machine voltage, maximum load, and other parameters. Place the splitter in a safe place so that it does not come in contact with moisture or dust. It will ensure a good working health of the equipment’s motor.

Do not try to be overconfident about the machine and fix the problems yourself. It is wise to call the dealer of your log splitter as he knows ins and outs of that machine. It is recommended to buy a log splitter that includes a certain warranty period.
